When Your Body Betrays What You're Trying to Say
You're trying to communicate confidence but your body is collapsed inward. You're attempting to connect with your child but your physical tension creates distance. You know what you want to say but somehow your message never lands the way you intend.
The problem isn't your words but the physical state you're speaking from.
Your nervous system state shows up in your body in ways you can't hide. And your body affects how you communicate with everyone around you. You can't separate these two aspects of human expression.
Bo Eason joins me today as a former NFL player, speaker, and author. We explore the role of physicality and self-expression in communication, parenting, and relationships through the lens of the Biology of Trauma®.
How Your Nervous System Shows Up Physically
Your nervous system state determines your physical presence in every interaction. When you're dysregulated, your body shows it through collapsed posture that signals defeat or overwhelm, tight shoulders that hold chronic tension, and shallow breathing that limits oxygen and activation.
Physical presence matters more than most people realize because it's not just about appearance or image. How you hold your body affects your nervous system state directly through feedback loops. And it affects how others respond to you at the unconscious level before words are ever exchanged.
Understanding the Biology of Trauma® reveals why you can't fake physical presence when your nervous system is dysregulated. Your body will always tell the truth about your internal state no matter what your words claim. People read your nervous system state through your physical presentation before you open your mouth.
Effective communication doesn't start with choosing the right words or crafting your message carefully. It starts with your physical state and the nervous system regulation that supports it. Your presence communicates volumes before you speak a single word through how you inhabit your body.
What Football Taught About Physicality
Bo learned about physicality and presence through years of playing football at the highest levels. High-stakes performance taught him what most people never learn about the relationship between body and effectiveness. Your body is your foundation for everything you do, not an afterthought to your mental or emotional processes.
When your nervous system is regulated, you can express yourself clearly through aligned words and body language. When your nervous system isn't regulated, your words don't land with impact. Your message gets lost in the disconnect between what you're saying and what your body is communicating.
Self-expression requires regulation at the nervous system level first. You can have the perfect words prepared but if your body is in a trauma response, those words won't create the connection or impact you intend. The physical state determines whether communication succeeds or fails.
Bo's perspective from professional athletics reveals principles that apply far beyond sports. The same body awareness that makes you effective on the field makes you effective in communication, relationships, and life. Most people ignore their physical state and wonder why their interactions don't work.
Physical Presence in Parenting and Relationships
Your children read your nervous system through your physical body constantly. They respond to your physical state more than your words could ever influence them. Presence matters more than lectures or explanations because kids are wired to attune to nervous system states.
When you're physically present and regulated, your kids feel safe and hear what you're saying. When you're physically tense or collapsed, your kids respond to that state rather than your words. They might comply out of fear or ignore you completely, but they're not truly connecting with your message.
Connection in relationships happens body to body and nervous system to nervous system before it happens through words. Your physical presence either invites connection by signaling safety or blocks it by signaling threat or unavailability. You can't override this biological reality through better communication techniques.
Embodiment as communication means being in your body and truly present in the moment changes everything about how you relate to others. This is nervous system regulation expressed through physicality in ways that create genuine connection. When you're embodied, people feel it and respond to that authentic presence.
Bo emphasizes that you can learn to inhabit your body differently and change your physical presence through awareness and practice. This isn't about becoming someone you're not but about removing the blocks that keep you from expressing your true self through your physical being. Trauma often creates disconnection from the body, and healing involves coming back into embodied presence.
